In the world of business (& in life), there's a powerful message that can be summed up in the phrase 'BE YOU' - it's about embracing your true self & staying true to your values. Believing in oneself & being authentic are crucial qualities for individuals in business for several reasons:
Confidence: Self-belief instills confidence. When you believe in yourself and your abilities, you're more likely to take calculated risks, make decisions, and face
challenges with greater self-assuredness. I got my real estate license in 2015. I had to believe in myself and have the confidence to “jump off the cliff of life”, as I call it. I’d saved up money and did all the long-term planning that I could to jump in full-time. It’s not something I’d recommend others try to do. It was scary to stand at that “cliff of life” and decide to jump away from a steady paycheck salary job. I had to tell myself though that the only way for a bird to know if it can fly or not is to jump. The bird can either fly, soar for a while & then come down to a soft & safe landing, or it can just absolutely & completely crash and die. But you will never know until you jump, and, so, I jumped. As my Uncle Kenny always said, “No one can believe in you until you believe in yourself”. This confidence can inspire confidence in others, but believing in yourself is the very first step. When you have confidence in your own abilities, you unlock a world of possibilities. It's a journey that involves doing what's important to you. For me, that’s helping others and pursuing my passions. Know that you have a purpose in life, and what you do for a living can simply be the vehicle that helps get you to that purpose or make the fulfillment of that purpose possible.
Resilience: Business, like everything in life, is filled with ups and downs. Everything, both good and bad, can be cyclical. Believing in yourself can help you persevere through the inevitable tough times, bounce back from failures, and continue pursuing your goals despite setbacks that are surely to happen sometimes. This resilience is essential for long-term success. When I first started in real estate, even though I was born & raised in Dothan, I wondered how in the world I’d be able to get my name out there and create a new business for myself. It was hard work…really really hard work…and I honestly invested over a hundred hours per week for years building my foundation to get things rolling consistently.
Adaptability: Believing in yourself can make you more adaptable to change. Change is what will always happen. Nothing in life, nothing in the world, nothing in all of reality, will ever stop changing. In a dynamic business environment, being open to new ideas and willing to adapt is crucial. Self-belief can give you the courage to embrace change rather than resist it. After breaking free from over a decade in retail management and then sacrificing for nine months in the oil fields of North Dakota to get started in real estate, I was determined to be successful. Those newfound skills are what helped me to adapt over the years as technology changed, society changed, the real estate market changed… and it always will continue to change. You have to adapt and innovate yourself and push yourself daily to improve.
Trustworthiness: Being genuine and authentic in business fosters trust. People are more likely to trust and want to work with someone who is authentic and transparent, as it suggests integrity and honesty. People do business with people they like & trust. First, they have to like you. Then, they have to trust you. Real Estate is a relationship business. It’s much more of a service industry than a sales industry. You work with people not to make “a sale”. You work with people in order to help people, help them reach their goals, and help them to solve their current problems. You have to have a reason, and money cannot be your reason. Money comes and goes. You're not just chasing profits; you're chasing purpose. You're not just working for success; you're working for significance. You're not just following trends; you're blazing your own trail. Whatever business you are in, make it your ministry. Your business is how you can make a positive impact on others and actually have the ability to make the world a better place.
Networking and Partnerships: Authenticity can make it easier to build meaningful relationships in the business world. Again, business is about relationships. People are more inclined to connect with individuals who are genuine and true to themselves, which can lead to valuable partnerships, collaborations, and opportunities. Many of the most significant relationships aren’t short-term either. In business, you can quickly establish lifelong relationships and friendships simply by surrounding yourself with like-minded and driven people. This 'BE YOU' philosophy is a reminder that in the pursuit of success, we should never lose sight of our authentic selves. It's about making a positive impact, enjoying the journey, and creating a life that resonates with your passions and values.
Personal Fulfillment: Ultimately, believing in yourself and being true to who you are can lead to greater personal fulfillment. As a kid not provided with the ideal set of tools or environment available to get to the goals I wanted to achieve, I constantly told myself that I had to fulfill my potential. I was driven to “fulfill my potential”, and I still am. Success in business is not just about financial gains but also about achieving personal goals and finding satisfaction in your work. Don’t just be good at what you do; master your craft.
Longevity: Businesses and careers built on authenticity and self-belief are often more sustainable in the long run. Customers and stakeholders tend to have more trust in businesses led by individuals who genuinely believe in their mission and values. When I first got started, I began to create my new life around real estate and learning all that I could. I read everything regarding real estate, technology, sales, psychology, self-help and self-improvement, business, finance, life coaching, copywriting, etc. You name it, I read it if it could help me reach my goals. I knew I had to improve a lot of my skills in order to have the ability to adapt and “stay alive” on my new entrepreneurial journey.
Imagine a world where every business and individual is encouraged to 'BE-lieve in YOU-rself.' In this world, your unique strengths and values become your guiding stars. You find joy and fulfillment in doing what truly matters to you.
So, take a moment during the day to reflect on who you are and what's important to you. In business and in life, 'BE YOU' - believe in yourself, help others, and savor every moment you’re doing what you're truly passionate about. It's not just a mantra; it's a way to live your best, most authentic life possible. Let me know if I or Property Champions Real Estate can be of help to you in any way.
